Terms of Service
Effective 21 October 2026
These terms govern your use of Nox Chess, the blindfold chess website at noxchess.com, its game server and Nox Chess accounts (together, “the service”). By using the service you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use it.

1. The service
Nox Chess lets you play chess with the board or the pieces hidden, against other players and against computer opponents, and to train with lessons, practice drills, puzzles and game analysis. Much of it can be used without an account; ranked play, puzzles and friends need one. Accounts are on the Free plan or a free trial, each with the daily allowances shown on the Plans page; paid plans are not on sale yet, and nothing on Nox Chess can currently be bought.
Some opponents and accounts on Nox Chess, including accounts on the leaderboards and hosts of some game rooms, are operated by computer.
2. Who may use it
You must be at least 14 years old to create an account. If you are under the age of legal adulthood where you live, you may use the service only with the permission of a parent or guardian.
3. Your account
- You may sign in with Google or with an email address and password. You are responsible for keeping your sign-in details secure and for activity on your account.
- Choose a username that does not impersonate another person, and is not offensive, hateful or misleading. We may change or remove a username that breaks this rule.
- One account per person. Do not share, sell or transfer accounts.
- How we handle your information is explained in our Privacy Policy.
4. Fair play
You agree not to:
- use a chess engine, another person, or any other outside help during a game against another player, or to solve rated puzzles;
- peek at a hidden board by any means other than the ones the game offers;
- manipulate ratings — for example by deliberately losing, playing yourself on a second account, or arranging results; or
- exploit bugs to gain an advantage, rather than reporting them.
5. Conduct
You agree not to:
- harass, threaten or abuse other players, including in game chat and in invitations;
- send spam, or use email invitations to contact people who have not asked to hear from you;
- interfere with the service — for example by overloading, probing or attacking the servers, or by automated access that puts load on them; or
- use the service for anything unlawful.
6. Reporting, blocking and moderation
- Reporting. You can report a player from the chat panel of a game you played with them, or from their player page. A report goes to a Nox Chess moderator with the reason you chose, anything you wrote and that player’s last few chat lines in the game. The player is not told who reported them. A report on its own never penalises anybody; a moderator decides.
- Blocking. You can block a player the same way, and unblock them in Settings. Once blocked, their chat is not delivered to you, neither of you can challenge the other, ask the other for a rematch or join the other’s room, the quick-match queue does not pair you, and you cannot become friends. They are not told. A block does not affect leaderboards or spectating.
- Chat moderation. Every chat message is checked automatically before it is delivered. A message that breaks these terms is not delivered and you are told privately. Repeated violations lead, in turn, to warnings and to your chat being paused for a while (from a few minutes up to a day), and a moderator may review your messages. Chat moderation never stops you playing.
- Other measures. For serious or repeated breaches of these terms, a moderator may change a username, pause chat for longer, reset ratings earned unfairly, or suspend or close an account under section 7.
- If you disagree with a decision about you, write to the contact address above and a person will look at it again.
7. Ending access
We may suspend or close an account, reset ratings earned unfairly, or restrict access to the service if these terms are broken, or where needed to protect other players or the service. You may stop using the service at any time and may ask us to delete your account as described in the Privacy Policy.
8. Our content and third-party software
The Nox Chess name, logo, design, lessons, puzzles and other content belong to Nox Chess and may not be copied or reused without permission, except as the law allows. The chess engine the site runs is Stockfish, which is free software distributed under the GNU General Public License, version 3; that licence, not these terms, governs your rights in it.
9. Changes to the service
We are continually changing Nox Chess. Features, rating systems, puzzles and game modes may be added, changed or removed, and ratings may be recalculated or reset when the rating system changes.
10. No warranty
The service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, to the fullest extent permitted by law. We do not promise that the service will be uninterrupted, error-free or secure, that games will not be lost to a disconnection or outage, or that computer analysis is correct.
11. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Nox Chess will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for any loss of data, ratings or progress, arising from your use of or inability to use the service. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
12. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. When we do, we will update this page and its effective date, and announce the change on the site at least 7 days before it takes effect — 30 days before, if the change is to your disadvantage. If you do not agree, you may stop using the service and delete your account; continuing to use it after the change takes effect means you accept the updated terms.
13. Law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Korea. A dispute about them goes to the court that has jurisdiction under the Civil Procedure Act of the Republic of Korea. If you live elsewhere, nothing in these terms takes away protection the consumer law of your country gives you.
14. Language
These terms are published in several languages. For users in the Republic of Korea the Korean version applies; otherwise, if a translation differs from the English version, the English version applies.
